Computer Keyboarding 1
March 16

We start using Word next week but I will be presenting this very important lecture today because I will be at a conference Week 7, so please arrive promptly. You will still come to class next week.

Note: This week's lessons are due by Thursday evening, next week.

MICROSOFT WORD 2003: Next week, you will be required to have Microsoft Word 2003 at home if you plan to type your document processing jobs or complete your practice exercises at home. If you have Word 2002, you should upgrade. If you choose not to upgrade, you may use Word 2002 but your tests will all be taken using Word 2003 and the manual in your kit is for Word 2003. It is your sole responsibility to be prepared to take and pass all tests based on Word 2003! There aren’t a lot of differences between Word 2002 and Word 2003 but again, you will be held solely responsible for adjusting to any differences. If you read and understand the Word Manual in your kit, you should be sufficiently prepared. So, here is the information you need to upgrade or get started with Word 2003:

FAQ 7, Can I do extra work at home? will tell you how to get a free trial version of Word, how to purchase Office 2003 for a very reasonable price, or come to campus to type your documents.

If you decide to use Word 2002, from the GDP menu, click Options, Settings. From the Settings dialog box, under Word Processor, check Use Microsoft Word 2002. The path in the Path for Microsoft Word box will change automatically and should point to the directory where Word 2002 was installed. If you installed Word 2002 to a different place other than the default, you must click Browse and find the file WINWORD.EXE yourself. Click Save and re-launch GDP (exit GDP and open GDP again). If you follow these steps and still have trouble, contact the software hotline for technical support. Their number is 800-331-5094. They are available 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. our time, M-F.

Click here to go to a Gregg College Keyboarding and Document Processing training site to access a series of training videos on different exercise types used in GDP. Your skillbuilding is always more effective when you understand and focus on your goals for that particular drill. Enjoy!

MAP: Misstroke Analysis and Prescription

MAP (Misstroke Analysis and Prescription) analyzes 75 different types of accuracy problems, identifies YOUR top four accuracy problems, and then prescribes a list of individual, corrective drills tailor made just for you. These drills are designed to correct your keyboarding weaknesses and help you avoid making similar errors in the future. Click View MAP Slide Show to view the slide show first before attempting MAP so you'll understand how it works.

MAP is the most sophisticated diagnostic software on the market today and you’ve got access to it anytime! Because the diagnostic drills you will type after you take the MAP pretest specifically target YOUR weaknesses, the drills will be difficult for you. But the payoff will be huge.

If you need to strengthen a weak muscle, you have to exercises it, right? The same goes for keyboarding weaknesses. They must be targeted and strengthened through systematic practice until they disappear. That’s what MAP does, so hang in there.

After you take the Pretest, type each of the four Prescriptive Drills once. You will be automatically returned to the Lessons menu when you are finished with all four Prescriptive drills to continue working on the lesson. If you want to continue working on accuracy, take a new Pretest and continue through the MAP routine one more time.
